Visible light photocatalysis has recently emerged as a very active research field in organic chemistry. Chemists have been able to exploit different models of action of photocatalysts and successfully developed a number of synthetic transformations. We have focused on one model of action, reductive quenching cycle, to develop new chemistries. Specifically, we are interested in using amines as a reductive quencher, which allows us to synthesize amine-based building blocks and biologically interesting heterocycles. The goal of this project is to use hydroxylamines as a reductive quencher to generate N-hydroxyindoles. Although showing some promising biological activity, N-hydroxyindoles are substantially underdeveloped compared to homologous indoles.
