This talk is concerned with the optical properties of anisotropic nanoparticles of interest to LSPR and SERS-based sensing. We begin with a discussion of Al nanoparticles, which are well known UV plasmonic materials, but which can show visible plasmon properties for suitable aspect ratios. We show that plasmon broadening in Al arises mostly from radiative effects and this makes it possible to reduce plasmon widths by taking advantage of anisotropy and size. We also show theory/experiment comparisons for Al SERS. A second project is concerned with the use of anisotropic silver/gold nanoparticles in superlattice arrays. We show how tuning the collective plasmon properties of the arrays enables negative permittivity properties of silver arrays throughout the visible. Also, anomalous diffraction theory is developed to describe the scattering properties of micron size crystals composed of these superlattices.
