The application of supramolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding for the formation of liquid crystals is an area of considerable scientific interest Hydrogen bonding has been used to form small molecule liquid crystals as well as main-chain and side-chain mesogenic polymers, and calamitic, discotic , banana-shaped and star-shaped iquid crystals. One of the most commonly used associations is the benzoic acid and pyridine assembly. The resulting hydrogen bond is linear and of sufficient strength to maintain structure at the temperatures needed to form a thermotropic mesogen. Here we report the formation of self-assembeled polymers from three different components- a bisfunctionalized hydrogen bond donor and two different hydrogen bond acceptors, one of which is capable of forming a liquid crystalline phase. liquid crystalline phases were observed in concentrations as low as 30% of the mesogen-forming component.
