New teaching strategies are necessary to help students acquire a deep understanding of scientific topics. Our research group has developed and published an activity where students explore the limiting reactant topic following Johnstone’s model on the three levels of representation in chemistry: macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic. During the activity, students are guided through three stations, one for each level of representation. The current submicroscopic representation is static, presenting a limitation of the reality. To overcome this limitation, an interactive dynamic simulation of the submicroscopic representation has been developed. As part of the validation process, experts evaluated the simulation and a pilot study was conducted with undergraduate students to identify possible difficulties. The results of this phase of the project will be presented.
