Because of their high fissile metal density and superior thermal properties actinide nitrides are promising candidates for advanced nuclear fuels. However, their synthesis in high purity remains a major technological challenge. Our team is blending high nitrogen chemistry with f-element chemistry to develop new routes to f-element nitrides. We have shown that lanthanide and actinide complexes of bitetrazolateamine undergo self-sustained combustion reactions to yield high surface area lanthanide nitride and actinide oxide foams. We will describe our recent results on these and other new materials.
