Human serum albumin (HSA) is one of the most abundant proteins in plasma. It has been widely used as a carrier for drug delivery because it can improve the pharmacokinetic and safety profiles of drugs. Recently, HSA has been actively explored as a new strategy to modulate in vivo performance of molecular imaging probes. The molecular probes can be incorporated into HSA through covalent and non-covalent coupling, resulting in a variety of HSA conjugated imaging agents for multimodality imaging such as single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) and optical imaging, and so on. Furthermore, HSA conjugated probes have been studied for theranostic and image-guided therapy applications. In summary, HSA based probe design represents a novel and powerful strategy for development of theranostic agents.<br/>
