Polyesters continue to continue to enable emerging technologies from pressure sensitive adhesives and block copolymer multiphase membranes to liquid crystalline polymers for electronics applications. This lecture will highlight opportunities in the design of next generation polyesters with a special focus on the preparation of liquid crystalline polyesters. These fully aromatic compositions offer immediate impact in electronic applications with low flammability and high thermal stabilities. Acidolysis synthetic methods in combination with the judicious tailoring of composition enables melt processibility. Recent efforts have also investigated the preparation of segmented liquid crystalline polyesters in combination with biphenyl dicarboxylates with hexane diol and poly(tetrmethylene oxide) segments. Also, polyester block copolymers were obtained with preformed polysulfone segments to prepare a novel family of semi-crystalline polysulfones. Incorporation of tetramethyl cycobutane diol enables the preparation of sulfonated block copolymers. In addition to segmented copolymer synthesis, this lecture will highlight research efforts in polyester chemistry leading to the commercialization of a new family of liquid crystalline polyesters.
