The catalytic conversion of cellulosic biomass and biomass derived chemicals into fuels and value added chemicals have gained considerable interest in the recent years owing to limited availability of petroleum feedstock and global warming. Among the chemicals derived from the biomass, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been classified as versatile platform molecule and can be used for the synthesis of fine chemicals, polymeric materials and bio-fuels. 5-HMF can be obtained by dehydration of C6 carbohydrates using acid catalyst. The hydrogenation of HMF is studied using different metal and support based catalyst systems. However, there are few reports available in literature focusing on selective hydrogenation of 5-HMF. The expensive Pt and Au based catalysts are reported to achieved high selectivity to 2,5-Bis(hydroxymethyl)furan(BHMF). this view, the research is continued in search for proper metals and support materials combination catalyst systems for the hydrogenation 5-HMF that can lead to high activity and selectivity, less sensitive to the deactivation and recyclable. The present investigation is emphasized on selective hydrogenation of 5-HMF to BHMF using Ru based nanoparticles based catalysts.The polymer supported Ru nanoparticles based catalysts are characterized using different techniques such as X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and CO chemisorptions. The catalytic activity of Ru-based catalysts was assessed first time in the hydrogenation 5-HMF. The Ru nanoparticles are stabilized and dispersed on amine-functionalized PS matrix (Ru/AFPS) enhanced the formation of desired product BHMF. The various reaction parameters were optimized in order to achieve maximum conversion of 5-HMF and selectivity to BHMF. The catalyst Ru/AFPS is also recycled without significant loss in catalytic activity and selectivity.
