“Activation” of hydroxyl groups on the surface of cellulose nanofibers prepared by the aqueous counter collision (ACC) method was investigated in order to improve their chemical reactivity. The ACC method allows preparing separate cellulose nanofibers (ACC-nanocelluloses) by using a pair of high-speed water jets with no chemical change. In our previous studies, ACC-nanocelluloses have showed amphiphilic properties, which might be derived from partial hydrophobic surfaces. It is expected to apply as a new bio-based nanomaterial by the site-specific chemical modification of ACC-nanoceluloses with such unique structure. In this study, the pre-treatment of ACC-nanocelluloses with an aqueous NaOH solution was investigated to improve their chemical reactivity. In the moderate condition, hydroxyl groups on the surface of crystalline ACC-nanocelluloses were activated via swelling with alkali treatment, resulting in a successful efficient modification like a caboxymethylation in an aqueous system.<br/>
