The tetradentate ligands RN4 (RN4 = N,N'-di-alkyl-2,11-diaza[3,3](2,6)pyridinophane, R = Me or tBu) were employed to isolate and fully characterize stable complexes of Rh and Ir. Interestingly, these complexes exhibit accessible oxidation potentials and can generate detectable MII species, which were characterized by EPR and high-resolution ESI-MS. Moreover, a rare mononuclear (MeN4)RhII(COD) complex was isolated and allowed for a direct comparison with its RhI analog. Full characterization of such complexes in different oxidation states will enable us to investigate their organometallic reactivity in C-H oxidative functionalization reactions.
