Many envisioned technological applications of nanostructured materials will require fabrication methods that allow functional building blocks to be positioned into three-dimensional arrays with precise control over their spatial orientation. We are investigating methods for chemically synthesizing arrays of this type via supramolecular surface chemistry of 5-coordinate metalloporphyrin complexes. This presentation will describe the synthesis and characterization of gallium(III) porphyrin complexes that possess axial ligands designed to support, corral, or recognize functional building blocks, STM studies of the structures formed by their monolayers on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, and representative examples of the use of these 2D platforms to position redox-active molecules, chromophores, and fullerenes in three dimensions.
