It is both environmentally and economically important to trap CO2 released from extraction sites in order to reduce CO2 emissions. Traditionally, aqueous amine solutions have been used to capture this CO2 . However, these solutions are inefficient and corrosive. To provide an alternative approach, we have used asphalt or biochar, activated with KOH in the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) apparatus, to transform it into porous carbons. These porous carbons are substantially more effective and cheaper than the amine solutions. However, for industrial use, the use of KOH and the CVD is un-ideal, as the K metal needs to be removed, and the CVD is not widely available enough for industry usage. Reagents such as LiOH, among others, provide some success towards CO2 capture without utilizing KOH or CVD-based transformation. In addition, we have also found some success by using a high-power microwave rather than the CVD to attempt the carbon transformation.
