In this presentation, our recent achievements in the design of advanced materials involving cellulose and other polysaccharides are presented. These newly developed materials include photopatterned ultrathin films, which can be used either as functional dielectric layers for organic thin film transistors, or for nanoparticle based solar cells. In such solar cells, the cellulose matrix acts as regulating element providing control over nanoparticle aggregation in the solid state. In the last part of the talk, potentially applicable battery components are described where polysaccharides provide stiff but at the same time flexible scaffolds increasing the performance and efficiency of e.g. lithium ion batteries.
