The vertical bubble flow pipes in series continuous reactor was designed, development, and scaled up for high pressure gas/liquid reactions. This reactor type is unique because it enables long reaction times with high vapor liquid mass transfer rates, low axial dispersion, and high pressure rating. Reaction times of 6 to 18 hours are common for this reactor type. Commercially available continuous reactors are also designed for high vapor liquid mass transfer rates, low axial dispersion, and high pressure rating, but reaction times on the order of seconds or minutes. The pipes in series reactor is scaled to larger volumes and thus longer residence times without sacrificing mixing rate or plug flow residence time distribution. The vertical pipes in series reactors currently in GMP manufacturing are 200 L to 380 L, and we expect them to be scalable to greater than 1000 L. This is important for homogeneously catalyzed reactions, which require high substrate to catalyst ratio to be economically viable. It is also important for reactions such as O2 oxidations that use dilute oxygen in nitrogen and low catalyst loading, because of the long reaction times required. A key safety advantage is that these reactors operate greater than 98% liquid filled.
