Perinones are a class of N-heterocyclic poly-aromatic chromophores with large extinction coefficients that exhibit high thermal, chemical and photo-stability. These chromophores range from highly fluorescent to non-emissive due to internal charge transfer. This report highlights the facile synthesis, photophysical and computational studies of these perinones. Computer modeling and ultrafast dynamics studies of perinones reveals that the singlet-state for these chromophores, following excitation into the π-π* transition, proceeds to an intramolecular charge transfer state. This charge transfer state appears to be relatively short-lived due to the lack of a push-pull system.
