The Reversible Resistant Model of Adsorption Desorption (Di Toro & Horzempa ES&T 1982, 16, 594-602) assumes that the concentration of sorbate is a linear sum of a reversibly sorbed fraction and a resistant fraction that does not desorb. This model is made more general using Freundlich isotherms to describe the adsorption isotherm. A normalization procedure is described that uses only the Freundlich exponent derived from the adsorption isotherm. All the adsorption-desorption data will fit to a single straight line in linear coordinates if the data conforms to the model assumptions. It will be shown that deviations from the model assumption can be seen clearly. These deviations can be used to guide further experiments, for example at lower or higher concentrations, suggest possible mechanisms responsible for the deviations, and guide model construction.
