The concept of a new bbe spectrofluorometer as presented here has potential impacts on aquatic chemistry studies and water treatment. This instrument is designed to estimate online a potential risk of the appearance of taste and odor compounds resp. cyanotoxins from cyanobacteria in raw water and in drinking water. The principle is based on fluorescence measurements of 'free phycocyanin' (free PC or unbound phycocyanin), whch can be disconnected from the chlorophyll in the thylakoid membrane and separately detected. The method has proven its potential in the lab. The estimation of risk described here depends on the cyanobacteria concentration in raw water, its physiological state and the effects of the treatment steps in the water works. The implementation of the principles of free phycocyanin has an impact on the calculation of the photosynthetic activity of cyanobacteria. Similarly the laboratory techniques and correlations between sonification, potassium permanganate dose, and reaction time suggest that engineering design and operation of water treatment plants can mitigate or exacerbate the presence of taste and odors and microcystins in drinking water.
