Ionic liquids (ILs) are salts which exist in liquid state under 100 °C. They are typically a combination of an organic cation and an organic or inorganic counter anion. Physical characteristics of ILs such as thermal stability, vapor pressure, solubility, and viscosity can be regulated by changing the cation/anion composition. Further, the chemical properties of different functional groups attached to ILs can be modulated to have unique interactions with analytes for extraction and detection in complex matrices. Therefore, applications of ILs have become an active research field among the analytical research community.<br/>During this study, several types of ILs were covalently bonded to organic heterocycles such as thiophene and pyrrole to create novel electrically conductive and electropolymerizable, thiophene or pyrrole based ILs. These newly designed monomers were coated onto the surface of different electrode substrates such as metal microfibers by electropolymerization, creating conductive polymeric ionic liquid chemically modified electrodes (CPIL-CMEs), which possess a variety of unique properties including analyte extraction and ion exclusion. These CPIL-CMEs were then characterized by electrochemical and other independent methodologies to revel their properties. The CPIL-CMEs were evaluated for use as novel immobilization sorbent coatings for creating selective and sensitive sensors aimed at the detection and quantitation of important analytes.
