Biomass emerged as a highly promising feedstock to be converted into useful products due to its abundance, availability and various possibilities for a wide range of chemical transformations. In particular, lignocellulosic feedstocks have recently been the subject of extensive studies as renewable and sustainable resources for production of added value chemicals, fuels and materials using a number of (bio)catalytic strategies.<br/>Our group has recently been aimed to provide a multidisciplinary platform towards different strategies from upstream (pretreatment, extraction, fractionation, etc.) to downstream processing (catalytic, bioconversion, etc.) of lignocellulosic fractions, namely hemicelluloses and lignin for the production of useful compounds.<br/>This contribution will provide an overview of the valorization of lignocellulosic fractions (hemicelluloses, cellulose, lignin) showcasing recent studies from the group on furfural production from hemicellulosic residues, cellulose conversion to levulinic acid and subsequent upgrading to valuable chemicals (GVL, MTHF, etc.) and lignin deconstruction using heterogeneous catalysis.
