Current fabrication of white-light emitting diodes is accomplished by either mixing various organic phosphors, or by the construction of multi-layers films of semiconductor quantum dots with various emissions. The mixing of various phosphors leads to decreased efficiency, while multi-layer films of quantum dots have intrinsically lower efficiencies. The efficiency of these devises could be improved by using a single component material capable of emitting pure white-light with adequate quantum yields and radiative lifetimes. We have designed the first low temperature, colloidal synthetic approach to prepare ultrasmall (~1.5 nm diameter) CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite nanoclusters, which emit pure white-light. The nanoclusters exhibit a sharp absorption peak, and combination of band-edge and broadband photoluminescence peaks. The emission properties of the nanoclusters were further improved through precise manipulation of surface halide ions that resulted in large quantum yields of ~12% and radiative lifetime of ~20 ns. Thus, the intrinsic white-light emission of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite nanoclusters makes them an ideal and low cost material for solid-state lighting applications.
