Triazoles are highly conserved molecular scaffold among natural products and commercial drugs. We have found that we can achieve the synthesis of 1,2,4-triazoles with a wide variety of substitution patterns from commercially available hydrazines and symmetrical and nonsymmetrical imides under mild conditions. Aromatic hydrazines with a variety of substitution patterns provided the corresponding 1,2,4-triazoles in very high yields and regioselectivities. The reaction’s mild conditions also allows for the introduction of a variety of functional groups on the imide substrate. These highly substituted triazoles scaffolds are poised to work as building blocks for the synthesis of pharmacologically relevant scaffolds.
