A series of heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts were prepared by impregnation of Fe on activated carbon (AC) used to catalyze and degrade methyl orange (MO) by adding hydrogen peroxide. The effect of the calcination temperature and Fe loads was investigated. The Fe/AC catalysts were characterized by several techniques such as X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The characterization results showed that with calcination temperature increasing, the concentration of surface hydroxyl maintained around 26%-27%.Further studies revealed that no diffraction peak of iron was found on the Fe/AC catalyst after calcination at 400°C.The Fe species on the Fe/AC catalyst calcined at 500°C was Fe2O3.Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 were both observed when the calcination temperature was 600°C and only Fe3O4 was formed after calcination at 700°C.The activity test results showed that the catalyst calcined at 500°C exhibited the best activity, whereas the catalyst calcined at 700°C had poor activity. It was indicated that compared with surface hydroxyl concentration, different chemical states of Fe might play more important role in active carbon loaded Fenton-like system ,and Fe2O3 was the main active phase of the Fe/AC catalyst.
