The reasons why different novel ligands have the ability to passivate surface states are not well understood even though the uses of ligands to passivate the surfaces of organo-halide absorbers have been shown to improve device performance. The ability of ligands to passivate surface states has been attributed to several physical phenomenon ranging from Lewis basicity to "halide bond" interactions with surface exposed iodide. Thus, the fundamental understanding of why some ligands are more effective at passivating the surface states of organo-halide films than others remains an area open for investigation. Gaining a better understanding of what types of ligands are able to passivate the surface of organo-halide absorbers can also provide insight about the nature of surface states which are otherwise difficult to directly characterize. A combination of inorganic synthesis, surface chemistry, time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, and DFT calculations were used to better understand the physical properties of ligands and the nature of the surface states they passivate.
