The so-called Breslow intermediate is implicated in a variety of biochemical and synthetic reactions of aldehydes. We have found that C-N bond homolysis of certain Breslow intermediates occurs at temperatures as low as ambient. We will describe further radical chemistry of the Breslow intermediate, and postulate why the C-N homolysis does not occur during enzymatic reactions.
