Over the last 8 years GE Inspection technologies has invested in evaluating and developing UV curing material systems to be used in the production of ultrasonic transducers. These system enable the production of transducers with reduce production cycle times and improved performance. The technologies were develop at GE’ s global research center with support from the manufacturing facilities. Initial efforts were focused on UV curing systems that could be used to digitally print high frequency 1-3 piezoelectric composites. UV curing system were developed to be used as 1-3 composite fills, which reduced cycle times, increase capacities, and improved performance. Recently focus has been placed on developing systems with tunable acoustic impedance and the capability of being printed using digital micro printing. This presentation will give and overview these different efforts, along with some of the challenges and lessons learned along the way. Specifically focus with be given to challenges associated with implementation of these technologies into production systems.
