Molecular-level understanding of CO adsorption on cobalt surfaces is highly desirable in the development of improved Fischer-Tropsch catalysts and identification of preferable process conditions. In the current study, dynamic changes in CO surface species on Co/TiO<sub>2</sub> catalysts under Fischer-Tropsch reaction conditions were characterized with diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopic measurements. CO adsorption modes were identified with calibration measurements for Co single crystals using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). The experimental results for Co/TiO<sub>2</sub> catalysts under Fischer-Tropsch reaction conditions and for model single-crystal Co surfaces were consolidated and interpreted with density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
