Open access to published articles and to the associated research data supporting the article is a requirement of many funders around the globe.  Having ready access offers value not only to medical and life sciences, but also to chemistry as a discipline. As Editor-in-Chief of <i>Analytical Chemistry</i>, and as a frequent open access author, reviewer, and reader, I present my perspectives on the value that open brings to research, to education, and to public awareness of the sciences.<br/>
