Most manufactured products involve chemical processes. Chemical industry is indispensable in our society. However, large amount of wastes and hazardous materials is generated in current chemical processes. How to supply humanity with enough chemicals, food, energy, and materials sustainably without damaging our planet is one of the most important issues. Green chemistry, which is the utilization of a set of principles to reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture, and applications of chemical products[1], has received much attention in the past two decades, and significant progress has being made continuously in this field both in academia and industry[2-5]. Nevertheless, green chemistry is still in the early stage. Promoting green chemistry is a long term task, and many challenging scientific and technological issues are to be solved, which are related with chemistry, material science, engineering, environmental science, physics, and biology. It is no doubt that development and implementation of green chemistry will contribute greatly to the sustainable development of our society. In this forum, I would like to give a brief introduction on green chemistry.
