Trinuclear metal clusters are currently used today in various industrial and medical applications, such as catalysts in organic reactions for petrochemical applications and as x-ray imaging agents. These clusters have been been studied extensively, however, little is known regarding the kinetic reactivity of these molecules, specifically those containing tungsten. The cluster, [W3(μ3-O)2(μ2-O2CCH3)6(μ-O2CCH3)3]2+ was synthesized and characterized by NMR, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. In addition, the kinetics of ligand substitution by deuterated solvent was studied using variable temperature NMR at three separate temperatures. The rate constants for substitution and activation parameters were determined to propose a mechanistic pathway for exchange.
