A series of podand ligands has been produced, incorporating three to five nitrogen atoms, in attempts to create new chelating agents to extract metal ions from aqueous solutions. Common starting materials include 2,6-diaminopyridine and diethylenetriamine, each combined with octanal, decanal or dodecanal via a Schiff’s Base condensation. The goal of the project is to determine if novel, inexpensive ligands can be produced to remediate polluted water streams. Thus, the ligands are designed to be non-specific to a wide variety of Lewis acids.
