Carbon-boron bonds are some of the most versatile in organic chemistry and serve as building blocks for the formation of carbon-carbon, -oxygen, -nitrogen and -halogen bonds. Unique methods for the direct synthesis of C-B bonds from readily available hydrocarbon starting materials are therefore attractive. Most existing routes to thse important compounds result in a single C-B bond forming step. My lecture will focus on cobalt complexes bearing redox-active diimine ligands that promote the polyborylation of C(sp3)-H bonds of alkyl aromatics. Alkyl-substituted bis(imino)pyridine catalyss have also been discovered that promote rare examples of 1,1-difunctionalization of terminal alkynes with diboron reagents. When the diboron reagent is asymmetric, stereoselective synthesis of single isomer products has been achieved. The mechanism of both catalytic reactions as well as the synthetic application of the polyborylated products will be emphasized.
