The degradation of Chloramphenicol (CAP) antibiotic in water was carried out in UV-254 nm activated Persulfate (PS) system. A minimum UV fluence obtained from a 4.5 W PEN-Ray low pressure mercury lamp was enough to secure PS activation into sulfate radicals (SRs). Direct photolysis along with SRs and hydroxyl radicals (HRs) oxidation reactions were identified into the reactive medium. Several parameters were optimized so that to achieve complete mineralization and reach an acceptable reaction stoichiometric efficiency. Kinetics study was realized based on experiments taking into account parameters such as: [PS], [CAP], pH, UV fluence, [additives], e.g., Cl-, HCO3-, fumaric acid, humic acids, [Nutrients], e.g., NO3-, NO2-, SO42-. Results obtained demonstrated the efficiency of the UV-PS system in totally degrading CAP in aqueous systems and in sustaining the advanced oxidation process longer upon successive CAP spiking into the reactor while using moderate [PS]0, e.g., 1.0 mM at room temperature.
