As new and powerful techniques in analytical chemistry have been developed there has usually been an impetus for the next step to be hyphenation of the technology. This hyphenation has occurred using GC or LC more often than not. Such is the case with ICP-MS. At least as early as 1987 gas chromatography was coupled with ICP-MS for analysis. In this laboratory the first ICP-MS acquired included a GC for the express purpose of measuring trace contaminants in electronic and specialty gases. This presentation will describe some of the useful techniques we have used for a wide variety of petroleum and petrochemical products. These analyses include lead content of aviation gasoline; catalyst poisons in ethane, ethylene and propylene; metal carbonyls in syngas; sulfur speciation in various fuels; siloxane speciation in gas and liquid fuels; and characterization of halogen contamination in high purity solvents. Examples of different tuning strategies using single and triple quad instruments and collision cells as well as hardware interfacing will be discussed.
