The oxidation of alcohols into carbonyl functional groups is a process that has many uses in multiple fields of chemistry and biology. Chromium (III) complexes, when bound to either 2,5-dihydroxy-p-benzoquinone or chloranilic acid, (CrQCr)4+ or p-tetrahydroxybenzoquinone, (CrQCr)2+ exhibit the ability to oxidize simple alcohols. It has been found that the chromium complexes are capable of oxidizing simple alcohols when the chromium either has an open coordination site or no open coordination site in the case of bipyridine and ethylenediamine being the ligands. In an attempt to conduct kinetic studies on the oxidation process, synthesis of CrQCr2+ was attempted using both bipyridine and phenanthroline as the ligand on chromium. Multiple methods of synthesis were tested; the results of these synthesis will be presented.
