The University of California, San Diego chapter of the American Chemical Society serves as a comprehensive resource for undergraduate students who are passionate about chemistry. As a student-led organization, ACS-SA hosts a variety of social, service, academic, and professional events to facilitate undergraduate students’ success and engagement in the chemical sciences. These include career and professional school panels, green chemistry demonstrations, academic and industry lab tours, San Diego chemistry expositions, student-faculty mixers, and an annual, department-wide undergraduate research symposium. In addition, our weekly general body meetings typically feature presentations from a chemistry professional and opportunities for peer-networking. In a more concerted effort to build community around a mutual appreciation for the chemical sciences, the ACS-SA mentoring program was established in Fall 2016. Students are assigned a mentor/mentee with whom they can exchange advice and seek guidance from. By hosting regular activities, organizing programs and starting new initiatives, we have effectively strengthened student engagement in our chapter.
