The artificial photosynthesis of solar fuels has been proposed as a promising solution to the current energy problem. It is well-known that one of the major obstacle to the production of solar fuels, starting from abundant raw materials, stems from retrieving the necessary electrons and protons from water oxidation.<br/>Over the last years, tremendous efforts have been devoted to develop efficient water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) based on earth abundant metals or less abundant, but very often much more active, noble metals, paying attention to minimize their utilization. The latter strategy can be successfully pursued by properly doping suitable materials with a little amount of active metal centers and by heterogenizing molecular catalysts onto proper supports. Generally speaking, the advantage of exploiting heterogenized catalysts stems in the possibility to preliminarily optimize the electronic and steric features of the metal center before the anchorage through the proper selection of the ligand framework.<br/>In this contribution, the results of our recent studies aimed at developing efficient molecular, heterogenized and heterogeneous WOCs based on iridium are reported (Figure).
