Catalytic Hydrothermal Conversion Jet (CHCJ) and Diesel (CHCD) fuels are new alternative fuels produced from plant oils. Recently the U.S. Navy successfully flew a jet using 100% CHCJ. As with many fuels, understanding and modeling its combustion can be simplified if a surrogate mixture containing fewer components can be formulated that has properties that match the fuel’s properties. In this work, various 3-component mixtures containing alkanes, cycloalkanes, and aromatic compounds were prepared, and their physical properties were compared with those of CHCJ and CHCD to determine the best match. The physical properties tested were those that impact the transport and combustion of fuels in engines and safety: density, viscosity, surface tension, flash point, speed of sound, and bulk modulus. This poster will present results that show which mixtures best match the properties of CHCH and CHCJ.
