The University of Central Arkansas (UCA) Student Chapter has embraced the ideas of the ACS Chemistry Ambassadors Program: to put “a human face on our science and help connect chemistry with everyday life”. We have developed service opportunities for our members beyond our department and university community to make an impact on the greater Central Arkansas area. At EcoFest, a community-based environmental education event, we strive to disprove stigmas placed on the chemical industry by presenting how to use the principles of green chemistry to make chemistry safer for employees, the community, and environment. As volunteers at central Arkansas events, such as Museum of Discovery’s Tinkerfest in Little Rock and the state-wide Girls in Power, we inspire others using our passion for chemistry as a means of service. This face-to-face interaction with younger generations is an opportunity rarely found in the rural areas surrounding Conway. Additionally, we take part in the Arkansas Children Advocacy’s Heroes for Hope as well as UCA Science Night programs at local schools where we facilitate interactive activities that spark the interest of both younger and older audiences. Igniting interest in chemistry will not only remove society’s initial reluctance associated with the rigor of science, but also rejuvenate a passion for learning in parents. The objectives presented in the ACS Chemistry Ambassadors Program afford us an opportunity to shift the emphasis of our activities to dissolve stigmas, influence future generations, and create effective outreach to serve our community. In addition, by expanding our service opportunities for our student members, we are increasing our professional and chapter development as leaders in the Central Arkansas chemistry community.
