The ultrafast charge separation in 2D crystal heterostructures has raised a fundamental question: it is essentially impossible to fulfill both energy and momentum conservation simultaneously for the direct transfer of intra-atomic-layer exciton to the inter-layer exciton. How can the transfer be so efficient (&lt;200fs) between the two atomic layers? To answer this question, we applied newly developed ultrafast 2D Vis/NIR/IR microspectrosocpy to study heterostructures composed of two atomic layers. The simultaneous spatial, temporal and energy-state resolutions of the experiments allow us to provide insights into the puzzle.
