Alkali titanates are sparingly soluble materials that can serve as very effective ion-exchangers in dilute acids, neutral pHs and in strongly alkaline solutions. One of these titanates, referred to as monosodium titanate (MST), having an empirical formula of NaHTi2O5.xH2O, is used at the Savannah River Site to remove Sr-90 and alpha-emitting radionuclides from alkaline high-level nuclear waste solutions. Exchanging sodium ions for other metal ions produces materials that can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and cancer cells. Alkali titanates react instantly with hydrogen peroxide forming peroxo-titanium species within the structural framework leading to modified chemical properties. This paper will review the synthesis, properties, and applications of these alkali titanates.
