A combined production of levulinic acid and sulfonated carbon from glucose was conducted in one-pot reaction. P-toluenesulfonic acid was used as a hydrolysis catalyst as well as a sulfonating agent at the same time. Water dosage in the reactions was very important, since low water dosage was benefit for the sulfonated carbon formation, but unfavourable to levulinic acid production. When the mass ratio of the raw materials glucose: p-toluenesulfonic acid : water was 100: 100: 70, 18.1 wt% of LA and 36.2 wt% of sulfonated carbon were obtained. The sulfonated carbon was amorphous carbon based materials, containing aromatic, hydroxyl, carboxyl, as well as sulfonic acid groups. The catalytic properties of the sulfonated carbon were tested, which showed excellent catalytic activity in the esterification of levulinic acid with ethanol.
