Presented is a unique, multi-zonal crystalline composite based upon self-assembled coordination polymers. The resultant crystals are composed of zones of such polymers made up of 4,4'-dithiodipyridine donor units and M(II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate acceptor subunits. Both the copper(II)- and zinc-based polymers are known to exist in a helical form. The manganese(II)-based polymer has been shown to be helical in form under related, seeding conditions. The helical shape of the constituent polymers originates from the ∼90° <i>cis</i>- nature of the ditopic acceptors and also from the ∼90° C-S-S-C dihedral angle of the ditopic donors. When the metal ("M") is copper, the color is green. When the metal ("M") is zinc, the result is colorless. When the metal ("M") is manganese, the color is yellow-orange. In this research, composites displaying four apparent, primary zoning events are shown. Microscopic photography of the crystals will be included.
