Treatment of pyridines with alkoxyacetylenes in the presence of triflic acid produces N-(1-alkoxyvinyl) pyridinium triflates, an understudied class of pyridinium salt with a variety of potential uses in organic synthesis. The present study details efforts to optimize the synthesis of N-(1-alkoxyvinyl) pyridinium salts and early explorations of their innate reactivity under various conditions.
