Copolymerizations of ethylene with vinyltrialkoxysilanes are reported with similar activities as ethylene homopolymerization using both a “traditional” cationic Pd(II) aryldiimine catalyst, 1 (aryl = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) and a “sandwich-type” aryldiimine catalyst, 2 (aryl = 8-tolylnaphthyl). Mechanistic studies of the copolymerization are also described. An unusual β-silyl elimination mechanism was shown to be responsible for chain transfer.
