Laboratory studies and complementary simulation chamber results will be discussed for the atmospheric photochemistry of oxoacids in gas phase, condensed phases, and at the water-air interface. The results of photochemical studies of pyruvic acid and related oxoacids will be presented. Pyruvic acid, produced in the atmosphere by different anthropogenic and biogenic sources, such as the oxidation of isoprene, is a representative of this class of organic molecules. The reaction rates, mechanisms, and products are found to be dependent on total pressure/concentration, oxygen, and water in all its phases.<br/>            The laboratory results will be discussed to evaluate the phase dependent atmospheric processing of pyruvic acid and the results will be extended to consider other oxidized organic species found in the Earth’s atmosphere, notably aldehydes and ketones. The results obtained suggest that reaction with sunlight can provide abiotic sources of complex organic aggregates at the sea surface microlayer, in sea spray aerosol, and in clouds and fogs.<br/>
