Assigning the absolute configuration of a stereocenter is often the most difficult aspect of the chemical characterization process. Due to this, a new and simple extension of the Competing Enantioselective Conversion (CEC) method has been developed, that utilizes pseudo-enantiomeric acyl transfer reagents to assign the absolute configuration of optically pure amines via electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. This CEC procedure is advantageous because it does not require any work-up or purification and it utilizes micrograms of the amine. An empirical mnemonic was developed for assigning the absolute configuration based on the fast reacting pseudo-enantiomer.
