Syndecan 1 is a protein found within the body that has been seen to have involvement with metastasizing cancer cells. It is known to bind to TIAM1, which is a protein found within certain types of cancerous cells. This binding signal is then linked to movements of the cancerous cells to other parts of the body, allowing cancer to spread. Cancer is a significant issue in society today and the spread of cancer throughout a person's body is even more detrimental. If more is known about how and why these specific proteins cause cancer cells to move, then there could potentially be a way to stop this binding signal and contain tumors so that they can be treated more effectively. This research includes optimizing the procedures that involve DNA manipulation in order to later test the protein interactions between viable cells. It also entails understanding more about these proteins and their interactions because little is known about why these processes occur the way they do. The most recent proceedings include the synthesis of what are believed to be viable cells to be used in transformation tests. Further tests of the competency of those cells, as well as the ligation protocol of cut DNA strands, are the next steps to be taken.
