Materials of the ThCr2Si2 structure type represent the most abundant family of ternary intermetallic compounds. The interest in these intermetallics spiked a few years ago, with the discovery of high-temperature superconductors derived from BaFe2As2 and related compounds. In addition, many other intriguing physical behaviors have been observed for ThCr2Si2-type structures, such as heavy-fermion behavior, pressure-induced magnetism, metamagnetic transitions, and magnetically-driven superconductivity. In this contribution, we demonstrate how the strong correlation between the electornic and crystal structures and magnetic properties of ACo2Pn2 (A = Ca, La, Ce, Eu) materials can be leveraged to observe an emergence of different magnetic exchange regimes and magnetically ordered states. Of particular importance are mixed-valence and chemical-pressure effects, which impact the character of electronic distribution at the Fermi level and lead to the dramatic modification of magnetic properties in EuCo2Pn2, Ca1-xEuxCo2Pn2, and La1-xCexCo2P2.
