Elemental analysis in the petroleum industry can provide vital information in many areas of the production cycle, from catalytic cracking processes to prevention of environmental pollution from finished fuels. Many laboratories are required to perform multi-elemental analysis in petroleum products and derivatives. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) is frequently used for the determination of trace elements in petroleum products due to its reliability, robustness and sensitivity. A successful analysis needs to take into account sample characteristics and challenges associated with organic sample analysis, such as the high volatility of gasoline and spectral interferences due to carbon species present.<br/>To run challenging organic samples, the ICP-OES RF system must be able to maintain a stable and robust plasma throughout analysis, include a vertically oriented torch to handle carbon build up and correct for spectral interferences present due to carbon species present. The Agilent 5110 ICP-OES addresses these challenges, without compromising on analytical performance and when fitted with the Agilent AVS 6 Advanced Valve System greatly improves productivity.<br/>This presentation will cover the Agilent 5110 ICP-OES suitability to organic sample analysis and example applications of multi-elemental determination in petroleum products, such as gasoline and engine oils.
