A series of perylene diimide flanked organic dyes have been synthesized as pi-conjugated organic small molecules for use in solution-processable organic solar cells. These complex structures are accessible from a simple, efficient, and sustainable direct heteroarylation protocol. The optoelectronic properties and the self-assembly tendencies of these materials have been investigated to explore the influence of incorporating the different organic dyes between the perylene diimide end-capping units. To correlate the structure-property relationships with device performance organic solar cell devices were fabricated using a straightforward air-processed and tested protocol. When paired with the donor polymer PTB7-Th, bulk-heterojunction solution-processed organic solar cells of the champion molecular structure, which incorporates diketopyrrolopyrrole as the organic dye core, achieved power conversion efficiencies reaching 5.0 %.
